Creating a Wildlife-Friendly Yard: Songbirds

There are many ways to create wildlife habitat on your property, and it doesn’t matter if you have acres of land or a small patio, no space is too small to create wildlife habitat.

If you’re hoping to attract beautiful songbirds to your outdoor space, start out with providing a food source. Songbirds will be attracted to a variety of food sources, including sunflower seeds, peanuts, thistle, mealworms, and fruit. Safflower seeds attract songbirds but aren’t as attractive to pests such as squirrels or starlings. The seeds from flowers like bell flower, columbine, marigolds, and phlox will attract quite a few bird species while beautifying your garden.

Trees such as oaks, beech, mulberry, birch, and evergreens are also important sources of food for birds throughout the year, can provide cover from predators and weather. Providing a bird house is another great way to provide shelter for nesting and roosting. Of course, don’t forget to offer a source of water if you can – a simple bird bath is beneficial for songbirds and can provide hours of entertaining bird watching!

By providing these needs we can effectively bring birds into our lives so we can enjoy them more. If you want more birds in your life, download our Guide to Attracting Birds and get feeding tips, native plant suggestions, nest box plans, and more: http://ow.ly/n4CP30cK0rj
