Bald Eagles Soar into Nest-Building Season!

Another early nester, bald eagles start to scout for nesting locations throughout Ohio as soon as late January. It is no longer unheard of to see bald eagles soaring over parts of Ohio, looking for last year’s nest or seeking out a sturdy tree in which to build a new nest. If you are lucky enough to spot a bald eagle carrying sticks or branches, this behavior is a great indication that the eagle is building a nest.

During February and March, eagles begin to lay and incubate their eggs. Although mid-winter may seem like a cold and dreary time to be outdoors, it can be one of the most rewarding times to view one of our nation’s symbols, the bald eagle. The birds and their nests are much easier to see in the wintertime since the leaves have fallen.

Bald eagle habitat protection and research is funded by the sale of bald eagle conservation license plates, income tax check-off donations, and sales of the Ohio Wildlife Legacy Stamp: wildohio.gov/support
