Dr. G. Stephen Vincent at KCH

Meet G. Stephen Vincent, MD from the Specialty Care Department, Vascular Surgery at KCH. It may surprise you to learn that Dr. Vincent enjoys hunting and fishing like so many in our area do.

We asked Dr. Vincent which things most concern him regarding patient care in our community. He shared that chronic conditions are of the most concern, specifically noting that smoking and not making necessary dietary changes for vascular health. We also asked what he would share with his patients one on one if he could that would most impact their health and well being, he said that he would simply say “please stop smoking and participate in diet control and exercise”.

According to the National Institute of Health “The chemicals in tobacco smoke harm your blood cells. They also can damage the function of your heart and the structure and function of your blood vessels. This damage increases your risk of atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis is a disease in which a waxy substance called plaque builds up in the arteries. Over time, plaque hardens and narrows your arteries. This limits the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your organs and other parts of your body.

Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. When combined with other risk factors—such as unhealthy blood cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, being overweight or obesity—smoking further raises the risk of heart disease.”

Don’t let the risk of these conditions have an impact on your life, talk with your provider about how best to approach making a change for a healthier you.
