Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express” featured in June at Adult Book Discussion

Agatha Christie’s classic “Murder on the Orient Express” will be featured in three different ways in June as part of the “Libraries Rock!” Adult Summer Reading Program at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry Street, Mount Vernon.

On Tuesday, June 19, 7:00 p.m., one of the most popular Christie novels of all time, “Murder on the Orient Express,” will be the topic of the Adult Book Discussion.

First published in 1934, “Murder on the Orient Express” is one of the British author ’s great mysteries.  Just after midnight, a snowdrift stops the Orient Express in its tracks. The luxurious train is surprisingly full for the time of the year, but by the morning it is one passenger fewer. An American tycoon lies dead in his compartment, stabbed a dozen times, his door locked from the inside. Isolated and with a killer in their midst, detective Hercule Poirot must identify the murderer – in case he or she decides to strike again.

On the following Sunday,  June 24, 2:00 p.m., the Silver Screener’s Free Classic Movie Matinee will screen the first adaptation of “Murder on the Orient Express” with the award-winning 1974 film featuring an all-star cast and Albert Finney as Poirot. Other stars included Sean Connery, Lauren Bacall, and Ingrid Bergman, who won an Oscar for her role as Greta Ohlsson. The film won nine awards in total and had an additional sixteen nominations in 1975.

More than 80 years after the first publication, the 20th Century Fox “Murder on the Orient Express” (2017) film will be shown at Free Movie Night on Wednesday, June 27, 6:30 p.m. at the main library. The film is directed by award-winning director Kenneth Branagh. The all-star ensemble cast includes Tom Bateman, Lucy Boynton, Olivia Colman, Penelope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Josh Gad, Manuel Garcia Rulfo, Derek Jacobi, Marwan Kenzari, Leslie Odom Jr, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sergei Polunin and Daisy Ridle.
