Through the Lens of our Park District Friends – Long Eared Owl

Nathan Mast shared a “Through the Lens of our Park District Friends” photo of a sighting of a Long Eared Owl roosting in the pines at Honey Run Highlands Park. Some interesting facts of the Long Eared Owl are they are the only owl to form communal roosts. The largest roosts found (not in Ohio) have contained over 100 birds. They have the most acute hearing among
owls as they can capture prey in total darkness. When threatened, long-eared owls can compress their bodies to incredibly slim proportions, and by also raising their ear tufts, assume a striking resemblance to a broken tree limb. Thank you, Nathan, for sharing your wildlife sighting, that is exciting!
