From the fantasy worlds of authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, the novel “Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch” will be featured at the Adult Book Discussion on Tuesday, March 20, 7:00 p.m., at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry Street, Mount Vernon.
Discussion leader, Christie Smith, from the PLMVKC Reference department, will share insight into the novel that some readers have described as a “clever satire that is harmlessly irreverent,” a “madcap adventure,” or “quirky and odd; dark but hilarious.” Others compared it to the Douglas Adams classic, “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.”
Amazon, who is releasing a new Amazon TV series based on the novel, explains that “Good Omens” begins with a hint of Armageddon in the air. According to prophecy, the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday. So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, the Four Bikers of the Apocalypse are revving up their mighty hogs and hitting the road, and the world’s last two remaining witch-finders are getting ready to fight the good fight, armed with awkwardly antiquated instructions and stick pins. Atlantis is rising, frogs are falling, tempers are flaring. . . Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan.
Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon — each of whom has lived among Earth’s mortals for many millennia and has grown rather fond of the lifestyle — are not particularly looking forward to the coming Rapture. If they are going to stop it from happening, they have to find and kill the Antichrist. There’s just one glitch: someone seems to have misplaced him.
