Freshwater Jellyfish in Ohio

Here’s something you won’t see every day – a freshwater jellyfish! Who knew we had these in Ohio?

These quarter-sized jellies pose no risk to people; their nematocysts (stinging cells) are too small to penetrate the skin. Freshwater jellyfish originate from China and first appeared in the Great Lake region in 1933. They turn up occasionally in quarries, clear lakes, and slack areas of big rivers in Ohio.
