The 1941 classic “Citizen Kane” will be featured at the free Silver Screeners Movie Matinee on Sunday, June 11, 2:00 p.m. at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry Street, Mount Vernon.
Orson Welles’ masterpiece took first place on the American Film Institute’s list of Best American Movies and continues to win accolades as one of the top five movies of all time by various organizations.
Re-released on Blu-ray for its 75th Anniversary last year, the film received nine Academy Award nominations and won Best Writing-Original Screenplay for Orson Welles who not only wrote, but directed and starred in the movie. Welles was only 25 years old and this was his first film.
The storyline focuses on a group of reporters trying to decipher the meaning behind the last word spoken by a dying Charles Foster Kane, the millionaire newspaper tycoon: “Rosebud.” The film begins with a news reel detailing Kane’s life for the masses, and then from there, we are shown flashbacks from Kane’s life.
As the reporters investigate further, the viewers see a display of a fascinating man’s rise to fame, and how he eventually fell off the top of the world. Welles is rumored to have based the film on tycoon William Randolph Hearst and Marion Davies and faced the wrath of the powerful publisher until Hearst’s death.
In addition to Welles, the film stars Joseph Cotton, Dorothy Comingore, Agnes Moorehead and Ruth Warrick.
The program is free and open to the public. A brief discussion about the film will take place before the screening. Refreshments will be served.
