The 1957 classic Academy Award nominated film, “Man of a Thousand Faces”, will be featured at the Silver Screeners Free Classic Movie Matinee on Sunday, May 21, 2:00 p.m., at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry Street, Mount Vernon.
The film depicts the career of vaudevillian and silent screen horror star Lon Chaney. The plot loosely portrays his real life and includes information on his contentious relationship with his neurotic wife and his premature death. Growing up with deaf parents, Chaney developed his talent to play a variety of strange, unusual characters by using makeup and facial expressions to so completely immerse himself into the mannerisms of the character he played that he earned the title “Man of a Thousand Faces.”
Actors in the film include James Cagney portraying Lon Chaney, Dorothy Malone, Jane Greer, Jim Backus and Jack Albertson. This was the final full length film for prolific character actor Philip Van Zandt (Citizen Kane, Cyrano de Bergerac), for vaudeville comedian and screen actor, Clarence Kolb (His Girl Friday, Adam’s Rib, Carefree, My Little Margie (TV)).
Hosts Mickey Shire and Steve Moore will hold a brief discussion prior to the screening of the film. The program is open to all ages. Refreshments will be provided by the Friends of the Library.
