Yellow Jackets Fourth at Ohio Academic State Regional Tournament

There are almost a thousand high schools in Ohio, and while not all of them have an academic quiz bowl team, Mount Vernon High School’s In The Know team was considered among the best 96 high school teams in Ohio to compete in the Ohio Academic Competition state regional tournaments on Saturday May 6th.

The double elimination tournaments occurred at six locations across the state with 16 teams assigned to compete at each. The MVHS team of Greg Gillen, Nicole Steady, Joseph Higginbotham, Alula Hunsen, Malcolm MacDonell, and Jacob Lebold played at Fisher Catholic HS in Lancaster. They beat Highland 66 to 23, Centerburg 60 to 53, and St. Clairsville 64 to 42, making it to round 5 out of 7 before losing to Lakewood (west of Cleveland) who will go on to compete in the final state tournament.
Coach Rob Fetters told the team “Remember that all of these schools won their leagues or tournaments to get here. They are among the very best in the state, and you are too. For my first ten years coaching In The Know we never even made it here, and you not only made it to the tournament by winning the OCC and Mid-Ohio, but you made it to the 5th round! You have a lot to be proud of today and this season. We had a great year, we had a lot of fun, and I’m proud of you.”  The Yellow Jackets finished fourth overall.
