The Foundation for Knox Community Hospital will unveil a new 3-D digital mammography unit at a reception in the Knox Medical Pavilion on Wednesday, April 12, from 5:30-7pm. The reception is free and open to the public. The Knox County Chamber of Commerce will hold a brief ribbon-cutting as a part of the event.
This second digital tomosynthesis unit was purchased with funds raised from The Foundation’s recent 2-year Your Family. Your Health. Your Hospital. campaign. Digital tomosynthesis of the breast is different from a standard mammogram in the same way a CT scan of the chest is different from a standard chest X-ray and creates a 3-dimensional image of the breast by taking multiple X-ray pictures from many angles.
“We are very fortunate to have 3-D Digital Mammography at Knox Community Hospital—a superior breast imaging technology often found only at the nation’s largest hospital centers,” said Dr. Robert Konstan, Diagnostic Radiologist at KCH. “Digital tomosynthesis provides more precise and accurate imaging of the breast. It reduces screening recalls due to normal tissue superimposition. 3-D Digital imaging enhances detection of invasive breast cancer at an earlier stage. This allows prompt delivery of treatment and, most importantly, improves survival of those with breast cancer. We are excited to bring this new technology to our community and continue the fight against breast cancer.”
