MVHS Gymnasium was filled with more than basketballs on Friday evening. New stuffed animals for Nationwide Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cancer patients were tossed to “Fill the Floor,” during half-times during all three boys games and the girls games on January 28th. The collection totaled 263 animals.
Mount Vernon High School FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America), organized the event with the support of the Girls & Boys Basketball teams and coaches and Cheerleaders.
Purple is the color of cancer prevention, and was worn by both the Boys & Girls Basketball team members and coaches to help promote cancer awareness and prevention. Fans joined the cause by wearing purple and purchasing Jacket Relay for Life lavender t-shirts. Almost $300 was raised through t-shirt sales which will support cancer research.
The special “Fill the Floor” event involved fans bringing a new stuffed animal- with the tags intact- and getting into the game for ½ price. Fans whose animal landed closest to the center court bucket won an 18 inch chocolate chip cookie. Friday’s winners were: Debbie Phillips, David Wicker and Avery Mullins. FCCLA was hoping to collect 200 stuffed animals. Project leaders Ben Williams and Darrien Orr were impressed with the incredible response from teachers, students and basketball fans, and are elated to have exceeded their goal.
