Debate Team Qualifies Nine to State Tournament

The Speech and Debate Team is excited to once again represent MVHS at the Ohio High School Speech League’s State Finals in Berea on March 3-4. Representing the Yellow Jackets this year are:

– Conrad Stein & Ethan Buehrer in Public Forum Debate,
– Zach Broeren & Charlie Mayville in Congressional Debate,
– Curtis Erlandson in Extemporaneous Speaking
– Makenzy Groom in Dramatic Interpretation
– Mehmet-Ali Schubel in Humorous Interpretation

Students had to qualify at the district tournament held at Napoleon High School last Saturday. Each event had approximately 5 qualifiers from dozens of entries. The district ranges from Columbus to Toledo and includes 21 schools. MVHS placed 6th overall.

“I am very proud of the students’ performance on Saturday. It is a long, grueling competition and they showed that they are once again some of the best debaters from around the district. They have worked very hard since October and I am glad that their efforts paid off so well. I am very excited to see how well we can do at the State Finals.  This is a very well rounded group” said Head Coach Jeff Gottke.

The Jackets compete next at the National Speech and Debate Association’s National Qualifying Tournament held at Gahanna-Lincoln High School February 17-18.  Good Luck Jackets.
