Six Mount Vernon High School Seniors recently competed in the Columbus College of Art and Design Scholarship competition which is held annually for potential incoming students. Rea Bennett, Ryan Bielecki, Fredi Bockover, Mary Lowe, Paige Hashman, and Kailyn Jackson were all awarded individual scholarships ranging in value with the group total being 320 thousand dollars! The students all submitted application materials and a portfolio consisting of 10-20 pieces of artwork to CCAD to be considered for a merit based scholarship. Columbus College of Art and Design, located in Columbus Ohio, is one of America’s oldest and most prestigious art and design schools getting its start in 1879. The college offers 12 major areas in their undergrad program as well as a graduate program. It is a great honor and speaks to the talent and hard-work of our art students for this many scholarships to be awarded to one school especially with the exceptional amounts that each one received.

These students are all in the Advanced Studio/Portfolio class taught by High School Visual Art Teacher Danielle Hoff. This class focuses on having the students use the building blocks of art and design they acquired in previous art classes taught by high school art teachers Deanna Badger and Danielle Hoff. Students in Advanced Art/Portfolio focus on creating a cohesive body of work, have the opportunity to make larger portfolio pieces, as well as learn more about the professional side of being an artist and designer. All of the students in this class will be participating in several other scholarship competitions this school year from various colleges and art shows in hopes of adding to this total!
