The Academy Award nominated western, “The Magnificent Seven” (1960), will be featured at the free Silver Screeners Classic Movie Matinee on Sunday, January 29, 1:30 p.m. at the Public Library of Mount Vernon and Knox County, 201 N. Mulberry Street.
“Once you meet them, you will never forget them” was one of the taglines for this classic film featuring an all-star cast including Yule Brynner, Eli Wallach, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Horst Buchholz and newcomer, Robert Vaughn who was nominated for a Golden Globe.
Based on “The Seven Samurai,” the film tells the tale of a small Mexican village terrorized each year by a gang of bandits. Three villagers are sent north by the village elders to buy guns. Instead they recruit seven experienced gunfighters to come to back with them to secure the village. The seven each have their quirks and skills, but eventually form friendships as they devise plans to keep the bandits from destroying the village.
Film buff and historian Mickey Shire will share insight about the film and compare the recent box office release of the new “The Magnificent Seven” starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke.
The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
